Tapestry Of Vietnam
Welcome to Tapestry of Vietnam, where your senses and imagination will be aroused by the artwork served up by Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai, a new generation artist of Vietnam.
Why "Tapestry"? One may ask. Tapestry denotes not only the canvas that Mai works on, but the fabric of life that she draws her inspiration from. Mai grew up in the post war years, unburdened by and unshackled to the country's war torn history. Her cosmopolitan outlook is very much reflected in her masterpieces, differing from traditional painting, which mainly depict scenes of Vietnam's agrarian lifestyle.

Canvas
Mai's main medium of creation is on the canvas. Starting off with oil in 2004, she moved on to acrylic when she found the latter to be a much more user friendly medium to work with.
Mai's work is not typical of Vietnamese artists. One notices her interest in abstraction and her style is very much contemporary as compared to classical.
Her subjects are also quite different, showing her keen interest in the lifestyle of the minority tribes of Vietnam - the large tree covered with red leaves standing in front of an old shophouse in the Old Quarters is so outdated and cliché ....

Lacquer
The mere mention of lacquer invokes images of Vietnam. After all, Vietnam is well known for its lacquer products: table wares, decorative items, and of course painting.
Mai started experimenting with lacquer in 2007. Unlike canvas painting, lacquer painting involves painstaking work and effort. It can take up to months to complete a masterpiece.
